There are generally two problems with valves:

• Valve (nearly) closed when it should be open = stenosis :
• Valve is open when it should be closed = incompetence or regurgitation :

Of the 4 valves in the heart, the valves on the left side are generally more important:

• Mitral stenosis
• Mitral incompetence
• Aortic stenosis
• Aortic incompetence
