Codes for a 207 amino acid peptide by the VEGFB gene at 11q13. This gene is regulated with at least peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ coactivator 1α There are 2 isoforms produced by alternative splicing. These bind to heparin and neuropilin-1, with the later being a receptor for it. It is also signals through binding to vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 1(VEGF receptor 1). Receptor binding stimulates expression of fatty acid transport proteins which increases the uptake of fatty acids across the endothelial-cell layer of blood vessels, especially in heart, skeletal muscle and brown adipose tissue. See also VEGF.
