Introduction

Cause of cholera infection

Aetiology

A motile gram-negative bacillus. Can be grown on specialised media (TCBS) in the microbiology laboratory.

Clinical

Causes a profuse diarrhoea. Outbreaks occur when basic public health infrastructure such as sanitation, water supplies and sewerage fail.

Stool mc&s.

Blood tests

U&Es to monitor renal function.

Radiology

Treatment

Priority is rehydration, either oral or intravenous.

Prevention

Clean water supplies, good sanitation and effective sewerage systems. A vaccine is available.
