Vomiting

Forceful expulsion of gastric and proximal small bowel contents through a combination of reverse peristalsis of the upper GI tract and contraction of the abdominal muscles. It is commonly associated with nausea.
Should be distinguished from regurgitation.
Causes
- Gastrointestinal
- Gastric outlet, e.g. gastroparesis
- Intestintal, paralytic ileus, small bowel obstruction
- Inflammation, e.g. pancreatitis, appendicitis, biliary colic, etc.
- Infection, e.g. UTI, gastroenteritis
- Pain. e.g. myocardial infarction, sudden blow to abdomen
- Uraemia
- Drugs
- Toxins and alcohol
- Hypercalcaemia
- Neurological
- Migraine
- Space occupying lesion
- Raised intracranial pressure
- Head injury
- Meningism
- Middle ear
- Pregnancy
