Von Willebrand factor

The key protein maintaining homeostatic balance in the coagulation pathway. Its function in turn is controlled by factors that govern its breakdown by enzymes such as von Willebrand factor-cleaving protease. It is coded by the VWF gene at 12p13.3.

Various mutations result in a bleeding diathesis and is called von Willebrand's disease. The severity of the disease is influenced by the exact mutation.
