Tight junction protein ZO-1 is coded by the TJP1 gene at 15q13 and moves from the cytosol to the cell membrane when cells establish contact. The long alpha-containing isoform is found in most epithelial cell junctions and its alpha domain might be involved in stabilizing junctions. The short isoform is found in endothelial cells and the highly specialized epithelial junctions of renal glomerulus and Sertoli cells of the seminiferous tubules.
