Zinc deficiency can be manifest by:
- Acrodermatitis enteropathica
- Apathy (Depression not proved)
- Poor wound healing
- It may be a cause of burning mouth syndrome
- Rarely seizures
Over 3000 proteins are complexed with Zn2+ but it is also used as a secondary extracellular messenger in peptide hormone action and nerve transmission. According some of the clinical features of zinc deficiency are due to decreased functioning of G-protein coupled receptor 39 which is extracellular zinc ion sensitive, rather than dysfunction of the many other proteins as historically thought.
