  • Selection of suitable material for microscopic examination
This involves macroscopic description of the sample, and an indication of where the samples are taken.
  • Preservation of tissue
This involves thorough impregnation of the tissue with formalin preservative.
  • Wax embedding of specimens
A complex process, which involves dehydrating the specimen first
  • Sectioning of specimens
By use of a microtome
  • Staining of sections
In most cases, using a H&E stain
  • Microscopic examination of slides
Using the light microscope
  • Further staining as indicated
Which often these days involves use of immunostaining.
