Great Britain
Rehabilitation Medicine is one of the newer medical specialities recognised by the Royal College of Physicians. It was organized in 1984 as the Medical Disability Society and is a registered charity (Reg. No. 293196). The skills of rehabiliation medicine as relating to common presentations in the elderly are part of the training requirements in Geriatric Medicine and a subset of Rheumatologists have been specifically trained in the speciality historically. A large proportion of the case load in British practice tends to be neuro-disability.
USA
In the United States, Rehabilitation Medicine dates back to 1937 when Dr. Frank Krusen organized the Department of Physical Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or PM&R, became a specialty formally recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties in 1947. The field expanded rapidly in part due to a large influx of disabled veterans following WWII. Physiatrists, or specialists in physical medicine and rehabilitation, filled the need for physicians who were able to care for severely disabled veterans returning from war. There are about 7000 board-certified physiatrists in the United States today.
