Wikipedia on Quality-adjusted life-years (Less technical, ? quality control)

Quality-adjusted life-years (QUALs) are a standard measure of health effectiveness, not without controversy as they tend to value potential productive lifespan in terms of years gained and be used to set thresholds for resource allocation. As well as their use in research, they may also be used in health care guidelines, insurance coverage recommendations, payment tariffs and health policy recommendations. They may inform ethical decision making.
